Seminar on Corporate Governance for the DCCI Members

The Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), in partnership with Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), organized a seminar on Corporate Governance (CG) for the members of DCCI on August 11, 2007 in the chamber’s conference room.

Mr. Hossain Khaled, President, DCCI, chaired the seminar.

Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, Former Adviser, Government of Bangladesh, was present as the Guest of Honour and Mr. Faruq Ahmad Siddiqi, Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission of Bangladesh (SEC), attended the seminar as the Chief Guest.

Workshops on NGO Governance Principles for the Partner Organizations of PKSF 

BEI and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) jointly organized two workshops on NGO Governance Principles on August 16 and 19, 2007 at the BEI Conference Room. The board members and the senior management of the partner organizations (POs) of PKSF participated in the workshops.

Corporate Governance Awareness Workshop in Maldives

The Capital Market Development Authority (CMDA), in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat (ComSec) and the Global Corporate Governance Forum (GCGF), organized a workshop titled Corporate Governance Awareness Workshop on August 22 – 23, 2007 at the Kurumba Island, Maldives.

Workshop on NGO Governance Principles for the Partner Organizations of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF)

BEI, in partnership with Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), organized a workshop on NGO Governance Principles on September 12, 2007 at the BEI conference room.

Mr. Safi Rahman Khan, Consultant, BEI conducted the workshop, while Ms. Lopa Rahman, Project Director, BEI and Ms. Farzana Naim, Director, MJF made the welcome remarks. The other two speakers of the workshop were Mr. Ashraful Hadi, Barrister, Dr. Kamal Hossain and Associates and Mr. Adeeb H. Khan, Partner, KPMG Rahman Rahman Huq.

South Asian Conference on Corporate Governance

BEI organized a two-day South Asian Conference on Corporate Governance in Dhaka, Bangladesh to strengthen corporate governance and share best practices in this region. The conference was held on September 2-3, 2007 at the BEI conference room. Experts from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan attended the conference.  

The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. A.B. Mirza Md. Azizul Islam, Honourable Adviser, Ministries of Finance and Planning, and Commerce, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Mr. Faruq Ahmad Siddiqi, Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission of Bangladesh (SEC), was present at the event as the Special Guest.

Focus Group Discussion on NGO Governance

BEI organized a focus group discussion (FGD) on NGO Governance in its conference room on November 29, 2007. The objective of the FGD was to share and receive feedback from the NGO practitioners, experts, and other key stakeholders, on the Self-Assessment Questionnaire and Governance Assessment Guidelines that BEI has developed for the NGOs in Bangladesh.

The programme was divided into two sessions. The first session covered the Human Resource (HR) and Management issues, while the second discussion session focused on the Financial and Accounting issues.

Roundtable Discussion on Duties and Liabilities of the Board of NGOs

BEI and the Federation of NGOs of Bangladesh (FNB) – Dhaka District organized a roundtable discussion on Duties and Liabilities of the NGO Boards at BEI on December 8, 2007.

 

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, Chair, FNB, was present as the Chief Guest at the roundtable. Ms. Lopa Rahman, Project Director, BEI, and Mr. Fakhrul Ferdous, Chair, FNB – Dhaka District, welcomed the participants and made the opening remarks.

BEI organized a workshop titled Corporate Governance in Bangladesh: How to go about Institutionally? on November 21, 2007 in its conference room. BEI has commissioned D.Net to conduct a feasibility study to understand the scope for establishing an independent institute of corporate governance in Bangladesh. Dr. Ananya Raihan, Executive Director, D.Net, conducted the workshop.

Capacity Building Programme on Succession Planning for Long Term Competitiveness of Private Sectors of Bangladesh

A capacity building programme on Succession Planning for Long Term Competitiveness was organized by the BEI for the listed and non-listed private companies at the BEI conference room on January 17, 2008.

Ms. Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury, Former Advisor, Ministry of Industries, Government of Bangladesh, inaugurated the programme as the Chief Guest.

The theme of the programme was the importance of succession planning for long term sustainability and market competitiveness. Dr. YRK Reddy and Mr. K. Padmakumar, two international experts facilitated the programme.

Training of Trainers programme on NGO Governance

A two-day long Training of Trainers programme on NGO Governance for the member NGOs of the Federation of NGOs of Bangladesh (FNB) was jointly organized by the BEI and FNB Dhaka District at the BEI conference room on January 29 – 30, 2008.

The objective of the programme was to build trainers, who would be able to increase the awareness level on the NGO Governance issues at the grassroots level NGOs, as well as, medium and small NGOs all across the country
