BEI organized a two-day South Asian Conference on Corporate Governance in Dhaka, Bangladesh to strengthen corporate governance and share best practices in this region. The conference was held on September 2-3, 2007 at the BEI conference room. Experts from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan attended the conference.  

The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. A.B. Mirza Md. Azizul Islam, Honourable Adviser, Ministries of Finance and Planning, and Commerce, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Mr. Faruq Ahmad Siddiqi, Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission of Bangladesh (SEC), was present at the event as the Special Guest.

BEI invited international experts from the region to share their experiences, challenges, and successes in implementing and practicing corporate governance in their respective countries. Mr. Naresh Kumar Jain, Secretary and the Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Chartered Secretaries of India and also the secretary of the International Federation of Company Secretaries; Mr. Rama Krishnan, President and CEO, Associated VAT Recovery Inc and also a chartered director of the Institute of Directors, UK; Mr. Asad Ali Shah, Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan as well as an Associate Member of Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan, Partner, M. Yousuf Adil Saleem & Co. Chartered Accountants, a member of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu; Ms. Jaweria Haisum, Corporate Governance Specialist, State Bank of Pakistan, were the international speakers from the region. Mr. Arif Zaman, senior advisor to the Commonwealth Business Council on Corporate Governance and South Asia, London, UK also attended the conference.
